The decision by Mugo wa Wairimu to vie for Roysambu MP seat after ‘pressure’ from supporters is a mere joke. This questions the integrity of our parliament, Kenyans and the leaders we elect. It is not lost on me that last year Mugo wa Wairimu was arrested for allegedly assaulting one of his patients. Where are the ethics?

It is so sad that in Kenya someone does an unethical thing, becomes famous and that earns him/her direct chance to run for a public office. I wonder what relevant authorities in charge of ethics are doing. Funny enough, in Kenyan politics, he will win the Roysambu seat by a landslide. Who do we blame for this whole mess? Our legal systems which have for decades been unable to provide a clear direction on ethical and integrity issues or we Kenyans for failing to assess a political candidate accurately before voting them in and instead follow the bandwagon or self-centred leaders we elect.

Funny enough, once in office, those who voted for him will be seen on streets carrying twigs in bid to impeach him in case he squanders public funds. This has been the Kenyan culture of voting in bad leaders and once in office we start throwing stones at them. It is just like marrying a commercial sex worker and expect that she will change while in your house. You are in for a rude shock! Kenyans should be civilized and cease the habit of repeating the same mistakes.

Voters have been on various occasions blinded by strategically planned campaigns and manifestos (which in most cases are just mere pronouncements) that confuse them and cast their ballot to leaders whose integrity is questionable.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) should formulate policies that will bar individuals who have been implicated in acts that malign their integrity and acts against humanity. What image do we portray as a country when we elect in bad leaders? The war on corruption, poverty and all ills affecting this country will go for a lifetime if we don’t cease from electing people whose public image is tainted.

Kenya is a great country but at the same time shocking. The behaviour of individuals despite of their bad deeds find their way into national assembly unquestioned, which is not a good norm. Indeed Africa is a graveyard of a beautiful constitution. Where laws  are not implemented to tame elements of oligarchy, moral decadences and impunity.
