As we celebrate Kenya’s 50 years of independence, I would love to recall one décor trend that was popular in my childhood — crochet.

Yes, my mother loved them, she still does only that she is now rather old to sit down and do it. Thanks to her, I am an expert in the same.

I grew up spending my spare time over the weekends helping mum crochet. Believe it or not, I did this at age 11.

In two weeks, mum and I would be through with a set of vitambas; and our living room always stood out.

Decorating the home is one of the best pastimes for housewives. In those days, needle craft was a skill many of our mothers, most of whom were housewives, were proficient in.

Fast forward to today; mass manufacturing has taken hold and transformed the industry and handmade goods have given way to mass produced products, which are easier, quicker and cheaper. There is hardly any crocheted vitambaa in many homes. But you could still create great craft with crochet.

This week, I take you down memory lane by reinventing this old crafts technique with a modern twist.  From cushions, rugs, toilet seat covers, bath mats, waste basket covers, lampshades and knickknacks among others, the trend for needle craft in interior décor is worth having in your home.

It is the little details that make the biggest difference; adding some cosy crocheted details will turn your house into a home.

Kitchens: Crochet crafts can be used in the kitchen to make it cosy and inviting. Create kitchen items like pot holders, dish cloths, table mats and ‘scrubbies’ for your dishes. Make creative coasters to place your hot cup of tea — they are not only decorative, but are functional too.

Bathroom: Crochet is the perfect medium for making cosy comforts. You can make your own wash clothes and other bath accents. Decorate your bathroom shelves with doilies or even use it to cover the lid of your toilet. You can also make crochet cover for tissue paper box.

Bedroom: Pillows are an easy way to add a touch of luxury and comfort to your bedroom; they also set the mood and are an easy way to add a touch of luxury and comfort. Crochet pillow cases to suit your taste.

Living room: Did you know that you could also have crocheted curtains? They are a beautiful addition to any small window. Cover plain lampshades to suit your room decor and use crochet to cover jars, bottles and containers that look ordinary to give them a makeover, then use them as décor. Your cushion covers too, can benefit from crochet patterns.

Borders:  Beautiful edgings add a luxurious touch to your linens. Add crocheted borders to your bed sheets, pillowcases, towels, and table runners among others.

Rugs: Cover you bare floors with beautiful crocheted rugs to complement your room.

Tables: Crocheted doilies serve decorative and utilitarian purposes on the table — they are aesthetic while they can act as place for your hot cup of tea. Crocheted runners can be placed on side tables, coffee tables or dining tables. You can then place other decorative touches on them.

Other crochet goodies: Crochet napkin holders, curtain tie backs and small figurines to decorate your home.

So bring back the memories, let’s start crocheting.
