Mutito MP Kiema Kilonzo visited a family that had been eating chicken feed in Lower Yatta District, Kitui County, and gave them foodstuff.

Kiema regretted the living conditions of the family and faulted the Provincial Administration for not raising the alarm early.

“It is unacceptable to see our people, and Kenyans, turn to eating poisonous stuff due to lack of sufficient food,” Kiema said.

The seven were taken to Kitui District Hospital experiencing constipation and diarrhoea.

They included a granny, Kanuna Mweke, 80, her “wife” Ms Kavengi Maleve, 35, and their five children aged between two and ten. Kanuna is married to Kavengi under an age-old Kamba tradition, kaweto — marriage between two women.

“We were taken ill after my ‘wife’ prepared us a meal from the maize bran meant for livestock,” Kanuna said.
