The Second Lady Mama Rachel Ruto on Saturday December 19 cycled 146 kilometres to mark 100 days of MaMa Cycling, a sports club championing for the protection of cyclists and prioritization of road safety.

Mama Rachel urges that it is time people began thinking about a healthier environment, a healthier population and sustainable economy by embracing non-motorized transport system such as cycling.

“A safe non-motorised transport system for #WatuWaBaiskeli is part of the solution. Glad to have cycled 146kms to mark 100 days since MaMa cycling was established," she shared.

The second lady and a group of cyclists gathered in the CBD from where they embarked on the 146km biking trip that took them through Machakos County toward Makueni.

She has been championing healthy living through physical exercise such as cycling, and she has been part of a number of cycling activities around the country seeking to encourage people to embrace cycling as a way of boosting their health status.

Other than healthy living, Mama Rachel has also been advocating for cycling as a friendly and effective mode of transport as compared to motor vehicle transport.

In October, she cycled for 37 kilometres in the company of 100 cyclists around Nairobi. Towards the end of November she again took part in a cycling activity in honour of Kui Gitonga, a cyclist whose life was cut short in a motorcycle accident.

Gitonga was a volunteer route marshal for groups of cyclists, protecting and ensuring a safe route by directing cyclists.

“I am gutter to hear of the unfortunate death of Kui Gotonga, a young, vibrant and innocent rider who was knocked down this morning while riding,” the second lady took to her social media to mourn Gitonga.
