Kenya Interior Ministry to help KPL tackle hooliganism

Recent spate of hooliganism in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) has forced the government to step in and help curb the menace.

The government, through the Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government officially partnered with KPL in Nairobi yesterday to help put a lid on the vice.

The Ministry has offered to establish an all-inclusive security management system that will involve fans, KPL, and other stakeholders working towards mitigating the hazard.

“Our plan is to engage fans and mostly the youth in constructive activities especially in sports to lessen crime,” Micah Pkopus Powon, the Principal Secretary from the Ministry of Interior said.

Despite the kind gesture, Powon has strongly warned that defiant fans would be arrested and prosecuted. “It is high time rowdy football fans were prosecuted and jailed.

“Those caught breaking the law during matches will be dealt with accordingly,” said Powon, adding that sports is a giant industry that supports many families and it should be accorded the respect it deserves.

Samuel Otongo, who is in charge of operation at Kayole Police Division called for proper equipment to help police fight the vice.
