Kenya: The recent wave of student unrest in several schools in the country has nothing to do with holiday tuition as Education Minister Jacob Kaimenyi would have us believe.
The Ministry of Education’s failure to act on past recommendations to amend the burdensome 8-4-4 curriculum is squarely to blame for the problems bedevilling schools in this country. Those who have had the privilege of post-secondary education in Kenya can attest to the fact that most of what they learnt in secondary school does not have any bearing on their present careers.
I, for instance, don’t understand why a student should sit at least two sciences' papers when he intends to pursue a career in journalism later in life. And this is just an example of the many academic injustices meted on students in this country. This is what must be addressed.
