Tired of dating for fun, how do I spot a keeper? (Photo: Getty Images)

Hi Chris,

Until now, I’ve mostly dated for fun, but I’m starting to feel that I’m too old for those anything-goes relationships where there’s little affection, too much sex and far too much cheating. However, I’m not sure if I even know how to recognise a genuinely nice guy.

Nice One

Hi, Nice One!

You’re right, young couples aren’t usually very nice to one another!

So, how do you tell when you’re with a guy who’s going to treat you well and stick around? Who could you maybe even marry?

Well, a nice guy never leaves you wondering how much you mean to him. When someone truly loves you, you always know. He’s always affectionate and you always feel desired and appreciated.

He’ll constantly support you, whatever you want to do. He’s never jealous of your successes or says things that make you feel inadequate. He’s always trying to improve himself, and his drive and ambition rub off on you, too.

You know he’s faithful and genuine because there are no empty promises. He never drops off the radar or goes silent on you. You always know where he is, what he’s doing, and who he’s with.

You feel completely safe with him. You argue, of course, but things never get insulting or abusive. You’re never afraid he might fly off the handle or become controlling.

He never sulks. You never find yourself wondering what’s wrong. He’s always honest with you, and you feel comfortable being open and honest with him. You share your feelings, knowing that you’ll never be judged or have your stuff spread around.

He always stands by you, even when you’re wrong! There’ll be good times and bad times, of course, unexpected problems and challenges. But he’s always on your side, even when things get tough.

You’ve met a guy like this? Well, make sure you’re a good partner for him, too! Let him know just how much you appreciate him, so that he knows that, having given his heart to you, you’re also giving yours to him.

All the best,

Chris
