Coast based artist Susumila

Pulse: Rumour has it that you are about to marry TV girl Kibibi Salim...

S: Those are not rumours. It is true. I met her during the course of work and we fell in love. We are holding a small function next week to be attended by family members and close friends.

P: Why make it a private affair?

S: I have never been an extravagant person and I am happy that she has agreed to my suggestions. We will just go through wedding formalities and have guests enjoy themselves. Nothing much!

P: Where is the honeymoon going to be then?

S: We are yet to decide between Zanzibar and Diani. If God wills, we will be in Zanzibar for one week immediately after the wedding.

P: Your former wife Ruth has been in the media with claims that you have neglected her and the kids and that you are marrying behind her back. Is that true?

S: (Laughs). It is sad that she can stoop to such levels. It is interesting because she does not even have a marriage certificate. We tried but the marriage failed and we parted ways amicably. We agreed on the amount I would be sending each month and she is well taken care of. She is just making noise.

P: Back to music, you recently released Tuliza Nyuva with Kaa La Moto, Vivonce and Rabbit with the lyrics aimed at your detractors. Has your rant been a long time coming?

S: I had stuff in my heart I wanted to talk about. People are spreading malicious rumours and propaganda and I wanted to speak out.

P: Are the rumours that you practice witchcraft one of the things you wanted to address?

S: More or less. For a person to accuse me of practicing witchcraft, they must know what witchcraft is, otherwise how would they know?

P: You and your accuser Chikuzee were buddies and have even worked on two hot singles together. What led to that ‘meltdown’ from him?

S: I cannot say we were friends. We just happen to be in the same stable at that time and one thing led to another and we did the recording. What happened between then and now and him accusing me of witchcraft only he can answer that question.

P: Have the two of you met to resolve the beef?

S: We have met severally but I am always busy with other things. If he has an issue, he is the one to approach me. I have never cared what he is up to.

P: You seem to be dismissive of other Mombasa artistes. Is it because you are currently riding higher than them?

S: I am very humble. I work with anyone who can push my brand. The thing is, I have made more contacts than them in Mombasa, Nairobi and across the country and due to that, I do more shows and collabos. I am just working harder.

P: And what is the connection between you and Mohammed Abbas, the county executive in the Ministry of Youth, Gender and Sports, now that you seem to be the only artistes getting all the favours from the county?

S: There is a perceived notion that we are the guys around him but it is not true. Abbas has officers who identify artistes from the county to work with. I happen to be hard working with many hits and I automatically get shows. Other artistes like Ally B and Sudi Boy are also who are working hard and that reflects in the shows we get.

P: Have you finally captured the Nairobi market as you set out to do in 2014?

S: Not entirely, but I have made serious headway. I have worked with Rabbit, Kush Tracey, Obinna and others because they recognise the brand. Hidaya is still a club banger and if rumours were true that Coast radio presenters favour me, then I would not be getting airplay in Nairobi-based stations. 2015 has been a good year because unlike the rest of the artistes, I have a proper strategy that I set every start of the year. I have already recorded hits for 2016.
