African Hockey Federation (AHF) has given Kenya a chance to enter two teams in the men and women’s category during the forthcoming African Clubs Championships.

Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) on Wednesday confirmed they have chosen Kenya Police and the United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) as additional teams to represent the country at the continental event.

Premier League winners Strathmore University and Orange qualified for the championships by winning the men and women’s leagues last year.

“We selected USIA-A and Police because they were runners up last year, in the women and men’s categories,” said Vivienne Agunda, KHU secretary general.

The hockey championships were transferred to Accra, Ghana, after Zambia, which was to host them, backed off.

It will be the first time USIU-A will be taking part at the event slated for December 9-18 in Accra, Ghana.

“We hope Kenya Police will make it this time round after failing to attend last year,” said Agunda.

Got walkover

Meanwhile, Kenya Polytechnic University got a walkover at City Park on Wednesday when National Youth Service (NYS) failed to turn up at the venue.

Kenya Polytechnic University College have now massed 11 points from nine games.

NYS now fight relegation after losing eight matches in the men’s National League. Blue Eaglets, who lost 1-0 to Usiu-A, are at the bottom of the women’s league.

The win pushed Usiu-A to second place behind leaders Telkom Orange with 17 points. No one was booked in the match, which Pauline Naise was the sole scorer for Usiu-A.

Missed target

Sliders hammered Strathmore University 3-1 in an exciting encounter.

Sliders moved up in the standings above their opponents and now have 12 points, same as Strathmore, but with superior goal difference.

The match commenced on a balanced note until Elizabeth Obongo netted a penalty corner in the seventh minute for Sliders.

Strathmore almost equalised a minute later through Miriam Oundo, who missed target by a whisker. Anita Agunda had great moves for Sliders upfront.

Sliders captain Lynette Onyango volleyed in a left cross in the 31st minute to make the scores 2-0 for her team, before half-time.

Strathmore resumed play very and replied through Regina Mwangi in the 38th minute, following a splendid move which commenced from their quarterback to make it 2-1.

Strathmore almost levelled the scores but their captain, Lillian Aura, missed a penalty that Sliders’ custodian punched off.

Agunda, who dribbled to score a field goal just a minute later, punished the university side.
