There is nothing annoying like coming to the office in the morning or a date with a bad breath, it is just a turn-off! In the morning there are basic things that we ought to do like making your bed, showering, washing your face and brushing your teeth. These are basic aspects of personal hygiene that everyone needs to practice.

The bad breath, also referred to as halitosis, is formed due to the food eaten overnight. These food particles gather between the teeth, tongue's surface, and along the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth. It results to a bad odor when you wake up.

According to toothpaste maker Colgate, these are the causes of bad breath and how to prevent it:

Dry mouth

This is one of the major causes of the morning breathe according to Everyday Health. The saliva that is produced rids the mouth of bacteria that acts as the trigger for morning breath.

Therefore, the production of saliva greatly decreases when people sleep so the mouth becomes a feeding ground for bacteria. Anytime you wake up, drink a glass of water before sleeping and at night to moist your mouth.

Gum disease

It is also known as periodontitis which is a gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports the teeth. Periodontitis can cause teeth to loosen, tooth loss and bad breath.

To avoid this, observe god oral hygiene which includes: brushing your teeth daily (morning and evening) and flossing to remove the food particles that are stuck. Visit the dentist for cleaning.

Smoking

This is also another cause of bad odor. This is because there are smoke particles left in the throat and lungs. This effect is typical of nearly any tobacco product that involves inhaling smoke or rolling it around in the mouth.

The smell of a freshly smoked cigarette can linger in the lungs for hours, hence the stale scent associated with smoker's breath. Simply, give up the smoking habits. This is will prevent you from contracting diseases and keep your mouth fresh throughout.

Poor oral hygiene

Poor dental care causes a plaque in the mouth which is a sticky deposit on teeth that attracts bacteria. The sticky deposit is formed by the food particles that have been consumed.

Once an individual fail to maintain the oral hygiene, he or she is prone to gingivitis or gum disease. Brush your teeth twice in a day.

Rinse your mouth with mouthwash to keep your gums healthy for it prevents gingivitis and guards against bad breath. You can also give your tongue a quick cleaning by brushing it.
