Kevin Wekesa scored a brace as Kabras Sugar maintained a perfect start to the 2021-2022 Kenya Cup season after thumping Mwamba 46-17 in a match played at the Kakamega Showground yesterday.
Wekesa, fresh from making his Kenya Sevens debut in the just concluded Dubai Sevens scored a second half brace with Brian Juma, Hillary Mwanjilwa, Teddy Akala and Asuman Mugerwa all crossing over in the win.
In Nairobi, Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad registered their first win of the season when they defeated Homeboyz 28-0 in the early kick off match played at KCB Sports Club before defending champions KCB thrashed Top Fry Nakuru 62-3.
At RFUEA grounds, Masinde Muliro University’s unbeaten run came to an end after a narrow 21-20 loss to Kenya Harlequin while Strathmore Leos defeated Impala 22-12 to stretch their unbeaten run to three games.
In Kakamega, Kabras started the match on the front foot after taking the lead inside the opening three minutes when Brian Juma who is fresh from the South Africa tour with Kenya Simbas crossed over the white wash from a line out. South African Ntabeni Dukisa added the extras for a 7-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, Kenya Under-20 international William Opaka scored his first Kenya Cup try to put the hosts 12-0 up after Dukisa failed to convert.
Mwamba tried to impose themselves in the game with huge contact set plays but Kabras’s backs lead by Asuman Mugerwa, Eugene Sifuna and Emmanuel Were stood tall and repelled all attacks.
Despite the visitors relentless attacks, it was Kabras who scored against the run of play with Ugandan international Mugerwa touching down between the posts.
Dukida converted to give the sugar miller’s a comfortable 19-0 lead heading into the break.
In the final half, Kabras picked from where they left with Derrick Ashiundu sprinting past the Mwamba defence to stretch the hosts lead to 26-0 after Dukisa added the extras.
The sugarmen celebration would however be cut short when Mwamba responded immediately with Elvis Namusasia sprinting from midfield to score between the posts and Charles Kuka adding the extras for a 26-7 score line.
Second half substitute Hillary Mwanjilwa added to the score sheet with an unconverted try before Kenya Sevens debutant Kevin Wekesa grabbed his brace with Kabras winning 46-17.
