Shabbir Nazerali scored 37 stableford points to lift the Safaricom Easter Open Trophy at Leisure Lodge and Resort Golf Club in Mombasa South Coast on Saturday.

The Nyali Golf Club member, however, had to first beat Wilson Atuka of Leisure Lodge Club who took the runner-up position on countback after both tied on points.

He was awarded a blackberry phone and his caddy also won a handset with Sh3,000 worth of airtime, courtesy of event sponsors, mobile telephone service provider Safaricom. Nyali’s Erick Kiama was third placed on a point less, while M Shah scored 35 points for the fourth slot.

Par 72 Course

The one-day stableford tournament at the par 72 course attracted 107 golfers from Leisure Lodge, Mombasa, Nyali, Malindi. Sponsors’ guests with valid handicaps also took part in the competition.

The course, which is still in good condition following last week’s African Junior Championships won by South Africa, proved a tough challenge for all the golfers.

Strong winds and tricky pin positions also added to the challenge, with the Likoni ferry crossing badly letting golfers down after some golfers who had made good scoresl missing their tee times and receiving a two-troke penalty that knocked them out of the prizes.
