The Government should offer a permanent solution to poor sanitation in informal settlements because the current National Youth Service (NYS) projects are expensive.
NYS projects are not sustainable. For one, garbage in informal settlements is increasing daily and the NYS youths conducting the clean-up exercise are overwhelmed. And if the exercise continues, it will cost the Government a lot of money yet the impact is minimal.
Also a permanent solution to clogged drainages should be sought.
It is more than a year now since the NYS projects were initiated. The Government has already spent millions of shillings.
Some cash has been misappropriated, meaning that more will be lost because there are rogue officials who want to take advantage of the projects to enrich themselves.

I am thus calling for the Government to come up with a comprehensive and permanent programme on sanitation that incorporates all residents in informal settlements.
