Toners were once considered to be a critical step in the cleansing process as they restore the skin’s pH balance. They are beneficial for oily skin and scars, as they help remove excess oils and dead skin. Most modern toners are friendly to the skin and therefore can be used on all skin types.
The decision of whether or not to use a toner should be based on your skin’s reaction to it. Some people like the fact that toners leave their skin feeling tight and smooth. If your skin is not oily, your toner should be alcohol free, as alcohol can be very drying.
Although toners are optional, here are some natural toners that you could make in your kitchen.
1. Apple cider vinegar
This tightens your pores and helps to clear up acne. The acids found in the vinegar help to soften and exfoliate the skin and also reduce scaring. Mix an equal amount of vinegar and water and shake well. After you wash your face, soak a cotton pad in toner and wipe your face with it.
If you have a spotty back or chest, use the toner on these areas as well. If you have sensitive skin, rather than using one part vinegar to one part water, dilute it up to six parts water. Ensure that you use the organic apple cider vinegar which is available in health shops.
2. Green tea
Green tea contains poly-phenols that protect against free radicals, and help reduce inflammation and increase the skin’s elasticity. Green tea toner can reduce the appearance of pores and give your skin a youthful glow. Steep one or two green tea bags in a cup of hot water for a maximum of 10 minutes. Cool and store the liquid in a jar and use after cleansing. The same mixture can be used as a face mist and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
3. Lemon
Lemon is a natural skin lightener and brightener that can be used to fade dark spots. It helps to restore the pH balance in your skin, which needs to be slightly acidic. Skin with a balance that is slightly acidic tends to be clearer. Mix three parts lemon juice to one part cold water.
Remember that natural is always better, therefore use freshly squeezed lemon as opposed to bottled juice. Use a cotton pad or cotton wool to apply the lemon juice and do it in an upward motion. Only apply lemon juice to your skin at night. Lemon contains natural bleaching properties therefore if used during the day; it can make you more susceptible to sun damage.
Remember to always apply toner to clean skin and moisturise immediately after.
