A shoe trader in Nairobi was allegedly involved in an altercation with his former wife after she left him for another man.
Through his lawyer, Joshua Kimanzi Lingi denied beating the woman and damaging her phone, saying she is the one who destroyed the handset and then blamed it on him.
Lingi is alleged to have assaulted LMN in Mathare North and damaged her mobile phone worth Sh28,461.
At about 11 am on the material day, LMN said she was on the ground floor of the residential building doing laundry when her estranged husband pounced on her from behind then grabbed and strangled her.
When neighbours responded to her calls for help, Lingi is said to have stopped attacking her and snatched the mobile phone from her.
When she tried to get it back, he smashed it against the stairs before leaving. The complainant reported the matter to the police, leading to Lingi's arrest.

Lingi told the court that LMN left him and eloped with another man.
He appealed for leniency from the court, saying he has been providing for his children even though they are not in his custody.
The court granted him a cash bail of Sh20,000, pending a hearing on January 19.
