We  spend so much time in front of our coffee tables.  To complete the look of your entire room, it would be prudent that you decorate the table since they pull a room together. An empty coffee table makes me shudder. It is the perfect space to show off your favourite collectibles. When decorating the table, consider its size, shape and weight. It does not matter whether you decorate the table using one large item or several small ones; the objective is to achieve balance and harmony with the rest of the room. So how do you embellish it while ensuring the table remains clutter-free?

Theme: Ensure you maintain a theme by mixing varying pieces that have a common aspect. Seashells in a sea-blue vase placed next to a stack of books on ocean life is a great example of a harmonious theme. You could also mix and match some of the items you already own for a perfect look on the table. Mixing and matching accents is also another perfect idea. Items that have the same use but look completely different will offer you balance. Place ceramic jars and glass vases with wooden sculpture on the opposite end of the table.

Room décor: Even as you decorate your coffee table, remember to keep the decor of the room in mind. If your theme is contemporary, consider placing contemporary pieces on your table. Make sure the items also reflect the style in colour and texture.

Tall items: Long vases and candles are great; when the candles are lit, they add sparkle to your space.

Odd object: Something sculptural and quirky will be good to express your personality; a piece of coral, a unique jar or even colourful marbles placed in a bowl are perfect examples.  Placing something unique and unexpected on your table is a great way to spark a conversation with your guests.

Fresh idea:  Some fresh-cut flowers will add life and easy-to-change colours to the room. Elegant flowers are easy to pull off. Choose a monochromatic arrangement and display it a plain glass cylinder. Flowers provide a nice smell and inviting atmosphere.

Books and magazines: Use a stack of large, art books to make a stack. You could top it off with a decorative item to add some spice. Limit your selection to less than five books or magazines so that the table is not cluttered. Vintage books have a great aesthetic in the room. Ensure your magazines are recent and not outdated.

Favourite collection: Get some items that you have collected whenever you travel or from second hand shops, and place them on the table. Unique storage boxes, baskets, books, and art are a great example. You can store in the baskets and boxes items that clutter the room like remote controls, playing cards or pens.

Tray: Placing a large tray on a coffee table breaks up the surface, especially if it is a massive coffee table. You could keep books and magazines on the tray for some sense of order.

Lantern and candles: Place a lantern on your coffee table and light it whenever necessary like when you have guests coming for dinner. It gives the table a fresh look. Candles are a great addition to a coffee table as they help set a warm, relaxed mood and provide an inviting smell for your guests.

Naturals: Antique wooden bowls, for example, add history to a room while at the same time remaining functional; thus totally changing the look of a room.
