Getting out of the bed in the morning and stepping on a soft carpet is an awakening experience — literally. A carpet adds instant flair and character to your bedroom. Other than that, it adds colour, texture and personality. So, what do you need to consider before you get the rug for your bedroom?

Measurements: Consider the size of your room, as this will determine the amount of space for the rug. If your bedroom floor tends to be chilly, get a large area rug. If the floors tend to be chilly, get one that is large enough to cover the entire floor. Consider the size of your room when selecting the size and shape of your area rugs. If your bedroom is small, get a large rug that covers the area under and around the bed. Simple-shaped rugs are more suitable for small rooms. You could experiment with unique-shaped rugs in a large room.

Colours: Go for rugs that coordinate with your bedroom décor. It should at least have colours from your bed, chairs, wall hangings, wall colour and curtains among other items.

Mood: Depending on your décor style, a traditional bedroom will have a solid-colour rug or classic patterns. Oriental rugs fit into many décor styles. If you want a restful bedroom, avoid rugs with large, bright patterns. But if you are okay with an upbeat mood, go for bold prints like stripes, checks and polka dots. A room whose décor has multiple patterns will work well with a solid rug. There are those who prefer multiple rugs instead of one — these will create a visually interesting floor treatment. If your room is dominated with solid and neutral colours, a patterned rug will best work for you.

Placement: So which is the most suitable place to put your area rug? A large rug that is centred under your bed and covers almost the entire floor will offer a traditional look. The modern look has the area rug leaving a third of the floor bare at the foot of the bed. A couple’s bedroom will look great with matching runners (long rectangular rugs) on each side of the bed.

Cost: The cost of carpets varies. There are handmade and machine made carpets. Handmade rugs are of high quality and durable, and it is difficult to find two that look alike. The only problem is that they can be quite costly. Machine made carpets are durable, affordable and can be found in varying textures and patterns.

When buying an area rug for your bedroom, consider its padding. This keeps the rug in place, provides extra cushion and reduces noise. Overall, the selection of your carpet is determined by your personal preference. Consider the rug as a piece of art.
