Original child star 'Shirley Temple' dies at 85

Before Michael Jackson, Macaulay Culkin or Miley Cyrus, there was Shirley Temple. She was a singer, actress and dancer who began her career at the tender age of three.

With her adorable charm, blue eyes and blonde curls, she was one of the most popular stars of the 1930s. Her hit movies include: like Bright Eyes, Curly Top, Heidi and Bright Eyes, Stand Up and Cheer. She was given a special juvenile Oscar in 1935, aged six years.

She is still the youngest person to receive an Academy Award. Temple starred in a total of 43 feature films - but found it difficult to sustain her career in adulthood as most child stars do, and left acting behind in 1950 at age 21. She returned for a brief stint in television, before developing a career in international politics.

She was US representative to the UN General Assembly and was US ambassador to Ghana (1974-77) and to the then Czechoslovakia under (1989-92). Shirley Temple died of natural causes on February 10, 2014, at the age of 85.
