President Uhuru Kenyatta (pictured) on Saturday addressed the nation ahead of the three-day viewing of the body of the late President Daniel Moi.
Speaking from State House, Nairobi, Uhuru eulogised Moi as a champion and a father.
He said as the body of the former President lies in state, Kenyans continue to mourn a man who spent a huge part of his life on sacrifice and service.
"How does one mourn an iconic leader?" Uhuru added.

He praised the President who led Kenya for 24 years as one who built the country with his hands and rescued it out of the shackles of colonial rule into independence.
Uhuru, looking sad, was flanked by his Cabinet and other senior government officials.
Deputy President William Ruto was present.
Uhuru further noted that Moi reassured Kenya and her allies during the handover of administration in 2002.
Moi joined politics in 1955 when he was elected member of the Legislative Council.
Uhuru described Moi as a courageous Commander-in-Chief.
He was "tactful, visionary and gracious".
Moi was committed to defend Africa, which he said has the answers to its problems.
"He was a teacher who taught for life and mentored many, including myself."
Other leaders also celebrated Moi as an iconic leader.
Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja said the political atmosphere in Kenya after Moi's death has been that of unity and to remember how he shaped democracy.
"The greatest honour we can give Moi is to ensure unity," he said.
"He played his part and when it was time to go, he paved way."
Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris remembered Moi as a hands-on leader who helped her set up her business.
