CID probe alleged threat on journalist

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Kisumu have launched investigations over allegations of death threats to a journalist by police.

Justus Ochieng’, a reporter with The Star newspaper last week recorded statement with the police that he had received threats from three police officers.

The journalist said the officers trailed him to a hotel in Kisumu’s Kamass, where they threatened to kill him over his newspaper publications on involvement of area police in crime.

He said the officers accosted him on Thursday last week as he left the hotel within the Central Business District, while in the company of two friends.

“They asked me if I knew them but I replied that I have never seen them. They told me that they will take away my life if I continue targeting them in my stories,” he said.

Last week, Ochieng published a story in The Star, which alleged that a police officer who had robbed a fellow officer of Sh250,000 returned the money after he had been identified.

SUSPECTS IDENTIFIED

The story stated that one of the suspected robbers was identified by the victim at Kisumu Central Police station where he had gone to report the incident.

In the story, the robbers also forced the officer to reveal his ATM card pin number, which they used to withdraw Sh80,000 at Luanda town.

The robbers had no idea that their prey was also a police officer.

Journalists within Kisumu last week accompanied Ochieng to Central Police Station to record a statement, where the suspects who threatened him were also identified.
