Kenya Sevens yesterday picked their first win after coming from behind to defeat France 26-15 but that could not prevent their downfall at Malaga Sevens tournament in Spain as they dropped to the ninth place playoffs.

Shujaa were due to play Scotland in the quarterfinals of Challenge Trophy last night.

Innocent Simiyu’s charges kicked off the third leg of the 2021-2022 World Rugby Sevens Series on the wrong foot after losing their opening Group D matches against Canada (19-17) and Wales (19-14) on Friday.

The result left them with two points and a narrow chance of qualifying for the Main Cup quarterfinals, which did eventually happen yesterday despite their remarkable comeback win against the French.

Trailing 15-0 at half time, Kenya Sevens powered their way back to win the match through Vincent Onyala’s brace, Nelson Oyoo touchdown and Derrick Ashiundu’s debut try.

The East African’s final group match win saw them finish third in the group with five points but France and Canada progressed to the Main Cup quarterfinals at their expense.

Locally, Menengai Oilers missed a bonus point win after beating Strathmore Leos 19-7 but extended their unbeaten run to seven matches in the Kenya Cup League.

Oilers are still at the top with 33 points.

Austin Sikutwa and Timothy Olang scored the two tries for Oilers with Geoffrey Ominde scoring three penalties.

In Kakamega, Kabras Sugar hammered Kenya Harlequin 31-6 to keep tabs on leaders Oilers.

Brian Tanga, Felix Ayange and George Nyambua were all on the scoresheet to give the hosts a 24-6 half time lead before Stephen Sakari sealed the bonus point victory with a late try for the millers to win 31-6.

The win saw Kabras, who still have a game in hand, narrow the gap on leaders Oilers to three points.

At KCB Sports Club, defending champions KCB condemn MMUST to their fifth defeat of the campaign after thrashing them MMUST 41-10. Other results saw Mwamba edge Homeboyz 21-7, Nakuru defeat impala 29-27 and Blak Blad beat Nondescripts 20-10.
