The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Nyamira Branch concluded its elections with only two officials surviving the wave of change.  

The polls ended months of spirited campaigns, which was characterised by two camps - Team Office and Team Change.

Team Office mainly comprised incumbents who were fighting to retain their seats while Team Change had those seeking elective posts in the union for the first time.

Of the incumbents, only the Chairman, George Makaa, and the Executive Secretary, Lewis Nyakweba, retained their positions.

Makaa beat Festus Segera after garnering 833 votes against 812 while Nyakweba’s closest competitor Joseph Sonye lost by 29 votes. Nyakweba is holding the seat for a second decade now.

LANDSLIDE WIN

Wilson Mung’ei is the newly elected vice chairman after a landslide win of 1,148 votes against his only challenger Ezekiel Menge, who bagged 506 votes.

Stella Moturi removed treasurer Tom Onsongo after getting 780 teachers on her side, against 755 who voted for Onsongo.

Moturi’s assistant, Getruth Kerubo, won with 943 votes against Irene Nyangweso’s 711.

Evans Matuga also toppled the incumbent Organising Secretary Cyrus Serembe by 217 votes after garnering 938 votes.

The seat of Gender Secretary was won by Naomi Ongaga with 783 votes against her closest challengers Nancy Nyaboke and Lenah Asiago who got 495 and 261 votes.

The elections were supervised by Nyamira County Labour Commissioner Daniel Gekuhe. The exercise that ended at around 8.30pm on Sunday was also supervised by Kuppet National Treasurer (Secondary Section) Edward Obwocha and Organising Secretary Paul Maingi.
