Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) boss Francis Atwoli has dominated headlines in the recent weeks but for the wrong reasons. If he is not insulting Deputy President William Ruto, he is making crazy suggestions that are likely to plunge the country into chaos. Atwoli has been pushing for a referendum to create a position for President Uhuru Kenyatta, who he says is too young to retire in 2022.
During Labour Day celebrations last Wednesday, Atwoli failed to address issues affecting Kenyan workers and turned the event into a political rally. It is clear Atwoli does not mean well for Kenya. There is no problem with a referendum. But if this is only about creating positions in Government for certain people, then we are heading in the wrong direction.
However, Atwoli’s sentiments do not surprise Kenyans. He has clung to power at Cotu despite pressure for him to give a chance to other people. Atwoli does not see the need to groom a successor. But Uhuru has indicated he will retire after his second term and that is what Kenyans expect him to do.
