A senior county government official in one of the Rift Valley counties is in trouble after Sh10million allocated for the inauguration of the governor cannot be accounted for. The new governor had rejected a Sh12 million budget set aside for his inauguration and directed the organizers of the event to trim the budget to Sh10million.
But the official who was on the committee that organized the inauguration; is said to have put the funds in "other uses" -going against the governor's wishes. Recently he wrote to ten chief officers asking them to reimburse Sh800,000 each to recover the cost of the inauguration budget.
Some of the chief officers have questioned the memo saying the event only consumed Sh2 million and they do not understand why they were being asked to reimburse Sh800,000 each.
The official together with the county newly appointed Chief Of Staff are said to have diverted the money and they were unable to account for the cash.
A whistleblower has written to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate how the Sh12 million allocated for the governor's inauguration in August last year was spent.
