President Uhuru Kenyatta shares a light moment with Gor Mahia football club players when they presented the 2014 Tusker Premier League Championship trophy at State House, Nairobi.PSCU

When Sofapaka spends more money than AFC Leopards, is it bigger than 'Ingwe', Tusker or Gor?

There were times when Kenyan clubs were to be reckoned with in Africa - like when Gor Mahia won the Mandela Cup in 1987 for the first (and could be last time if they continue playing the way they are).

The recent bagging of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title by Gor for the 14th time, and more than any other club  in the country, seems to prove the fact K’Ogalo is the 'biggest' club in the country.

Separately, AFC fans claim Ingwe is the biggest club. And in Ruaraka, the “silent” fans of the Brewers believe Tusker can gore them all.

What does it take for a football club to be considered ‘big'?
Is it revenue generation, spending power, fan base, or number of trophies won domestically and continentally?
Is a big club one that has the most legendary players, or the best team? Or could it be its number of likes on Facebook or followers on Twitter?
So which is the most important factor?

When Sofapaka spends more money than AFC Leopards, is it bigger than ‘Ingwe'?

Mathare United once had fantastic youth talent structure that produced great players like the Mulama brothers, Arnold Origi, Dennis Oliech, Fredrick Nadulli, Francis Kimanzi and Duncan Ochieng, just to name but a few.
Does that make it bigger than Tusker?

Of late, Tusker, AFC and Gor have all been ahead of the rest of the clubs owing to their huge spending power, as well as their ability to attract and retain good players.

However, with the arrival of Sofapaka a few years ago, people thought things would change.

Any team can become a 'big club' with major investments, but most only become rich and not necessarily ‘big.’

I wonder what would happen if a corporate body or any other wealthy individual adopted Chemelil or Sony, and decide to spend big time in building the clubs.

I wonder how long it would take before the likes of Gor, AFC and Tusker are considered ‘underdogs,’ and the notion of ‘The Big Three’ smashed to pieces?

While it may be hard to fathom or even entertain such thoughts, rest assured that it could soon come to pass.

I am of the opinion that a big club has a rich history, legendary players, as well as a good crop of existing players, professional governance and youth structures.

A big club must also have spending power, and sufficient revenue to finance its operations and acquire assets. A massive fan base is another must. Which club in the KPL can boast of all these indicators?
