Former Kenya international and Tusker midfielder Osborne Monday was arrested by Anti-Terror Police Unit after his mobile phone was used to communicate with terrorists.

Monday was Thursday being held and questioned by the ATPU detectives at their offices in Nairobi Area.

He was arrested after his mobile phone was used to communicate with a marked terrorist who is in Somalia.

A senior police officer confirmed they were talking with Monday and promised he would be released or taken to court if they get what they wanted.

“He is under interrogation and his family is aware. We picked him because we believe there is information he has that we want to confirm,” said the officer who asked not to be named.

Football Kenya Federation President Sam Nyamweya rushed to the ATPU office and promised to have him released.

“They say his phone was used to talk to a terror cell. We are trying to have him released because someone borrowed the phone and used it,” said Nyamweya.

Monday told police the person who used the mobile phone was a player at a club he was practicing.

“He claims he did not know his phone had been used to talk to prohibited group and people,” said an officer.

This followed news that he had gone missing since Wednesday. His family said he was picked up from his Umoja home by people who claimed to be police officers.

He was taken away from his home in Umoja in a Toyota Probox after they had taken his mother's and son’s mobile phones.

The footballer underwent surgery early last week and had been benched for the rest of the season.

Monday joined Tusker from Sofapaka in December 2013 after completing a loan spell at Mathare United during the second half of the 2013 season.

Monday has also featured for Azam FC of Tanzania and has been capped severally for the national football team Harambee Stars.

It is not clear what drove ATPU to arrest him but a source said there were “serious issues”.

“It means there is something we want to know from him. Let them know he is here,” said an officer at the unit.

His family had reported at the Buruburu police station saying Monday was kidnapped by unknown people. Buruburu police boss Richard Kerich confirmed a report was made at the station by the family.

Following reports he was missing, Kenyans on social media launched a hashtag #WhereIsMonday in a bid to raise awareness on the matter.

It was relief for some, when news that his parents had confirmed he was in police custody trickled in.
