It is not uncommon for the skin on the fingertips to peel or crack. While it is usually uncomfortable it is not a cause for serious concern. Here are some of the common causes of skin peeling on the fingertips.

Too much hand washing

As much as frequent hand-washing is important to prevent the spread of germs, frequent use of soap removes the skin's protective oils.  The result is dry skin or soap dermatitis.

The best way to deal with this is to wash hands only when needed and to use moisturiser afterwards. Avoiding drying the skin with rough paper towels will also help to reduce peeling.

Sunburn

Too much sun can cause the fingers to become sore and tender before it begins peeling. Although most sunburn problems end after a while, it is recommended that one should stay out of the sun and use lotion to moisturise their hands as they heal.

Finger-sucking

It is common for children to suck on their fingers or thumbs. But this can lead to peeling of the skin on the fingers and even painful sores.  While children outgrow this habit it is not rare to find adults who chew or suck on their fingers for various reasons.

Chemicals

People who are exposed to chemicals in their jobs or around the house may suffer from peeling fingers.  Most of these chemicals not only make the skin dry but also causes irritation. It is recommended that one should wear protective clothing and wash and moisturise their hands regularly.

Underlying conditions

A number of skin conditions may cause the skin to peel.  Hand eczema, psoriasis and reactions to allergens are some of the conditions that may lead to the skin on the fingers to peel off or flake.  One should see a doctor for diagnosis in order to address these underlying conditions.
