A dog ate a two-year-old baby that had been left by a mother in a hut to draw water from a nearby pond in Titila village, Galole constituency.

Reports from the remote village indicate the canine ate the baby on Christmas Eve, leaving only skeletal remains for burial. The remains were buried at the weekend.

While burying the child's skull that was dropped by the dog, mourners said the attack was a bad omen to the community.

In accordance with Muslim customs, Amina Konsoro, the child's mother did not attend the burial and will mourn in seclusion for 40 days.

Her husband, Abdullahi Konsoro, was not at home during the attack as he was way herding cattle in an unknown location. The burial was conducted in his absence as he had not returned home.

Reports indicate the remote village has about 200 residents but all men and teenage boys were away herding livestock and camel.

During the attack, only two children were at home with the victim but were too scared to chase away the canine as it devoured the boy.

The attack sparked panic in the village, with police officers responding by shooting to death stray dogs in the area.

Local OCPD Silvestor Githungo said that in the wake of the attack, "our officers shot dead ten stray dogs".
