Some students do such crazy things, you can’t be blamed for attributing their manners to poor upbringing and a failing education system.
Here are some of the laughable madness you are bound to encounter in schools:
1. Boiling school ‘nduma’
Some students boiled nduma and ate all the carrot and raw maize meant for agriculture students.
2. Milking school cows
This was popular in schools where tea had a fununu of milk. Payback time saw students milking school cows using Vaseline at midnight.
3. Boiling maziwa with Bunsen burner
Of course, students didn’t gobble unboiled milk lest they contracted brucellosis. They boiled it using the Bunsen burner in the chem lab before sipping it calmly.
4. Drinking ethanol/Kei-Apple ‘muratina’
Some students distilled muratina from Kei-Apple fruits pretending it was for science congress, besides getting high after stealing and drinking ethanol from the chemistry lab.
5. Toilet ‘panya root’
That lone ‘long drop’ toilet at the far end of the school fence was where ‘skivers’ entered only to get out through the other side from a shimo created by missing mbao walls. The loo was the gate to the nearest shopping centre for fresh kangumu (hard mandazi).
6. Tying pigs to the assembly flag post
Students whose punishment involved slashing grass on the assembly grounds found a solution via tying school pigs and two cows from the farm at midnight to chew the grass!
7. kuotea odijo ‘Kona Mbaya’
The school discipline master would not be lucky on bumping into mang’aa students at ‘Kona Mbaya,’ for he would be issued with some thorough beating, that’s after he’s been blindfolded using a school cardigan.
8. Raping watchmen
Some girls in boarding schools sorted their ‘dry spells’ with the watchman... the whole night!
9. Carrying the school TV to your room
This offence was committed by that ruffian of a Form Four student whom teachers feared could spirit the school TV, remote control and birika ya chai to his cubicle.
10. Knock, knock
Knocking on the principal’s door, then shouting his name; Mr Masake! Mr Masake!... before running away into the night was common among students who had a bone to pick with the headteacher.
