Environment Minister John Michuki died on Tuesday night at Nairobi’s Aga Khan Hospital while undergoing treatment.

A statement released by State House confirmed Michuki died of multiple organ failure.

On Monday, Government spokesman Alfred Mutua issued a statement allaying fears that Michuki was in critical condition and was responding to treatment.

Mutua’s statement followed allegations in the social media that the minister had passed away.

According to Mutua, Michuki was admitted at Aga Khan since Sunday where he is being treated for an unspecified medical condition.

Michuki flew back into the country on Thursday from the United Kingdom where he has been undergoing treatment. He had been away since late last year.

Michuki was set to join President Kibaki and other leaders for the 12th Session of Governing Council of the Nairobi-based United Nations Environmental Programme (Unep) on Monday, but was taken ill on Sunday.
