Although many women blame itchy scalps on the brand of hair oil they use, this is not necessarily the case. Like I often advise my clients, it is all in the mind. This is why I rarely ask what brand of oil to use on them. Chances are when they are aware that you are using a different brand from what they are accustomed to, they are likely to ‘feel’ itchy an hour later. Unless in special cases like that of a scalp that is prone to allergies, most hair oils are safe to use. What should be of concern is what you hope to achieve depending on the condition of your hair. This week I explore the different hair oils in the market and their functions.
1. Petroleum: This oil is made of petroleum and comes in a variety of brands including pastes, gels and creams. The texture varies from light to heavy. Petroleum does not, however, add any nutritional value to the hair.
2. Jojoba oil: Jojoba oil is one of the oldest in the market. It is extracted from the seed of a Jojoba plant. It is used to heal cuts, wounds and treat hair and skin. Jojoba oil is good for dehydrated hair and dry scalp. It is also sensitive to the scalp.
3. Castor oil: Extracted from castor seeds, this oil is suitable for the scalp. For maximum effect, use brands that are fine, since the thick varieties easily clog the pores. Castor oil works well for freshly retouched hair or freshly braided or plaited hair.

4. Cod liver oil: Although cod liver oil is commonly associated with babies, it can be used on hair as well. It, however, evaporates very fast. I recommend it for people with thick hair whether it is chemically processed or natural as it softens it making it easy to comb through. Since it is very fine, washing it out is easy.
5. Soya bean: Just like cod liver oil, soya bean is soft, fine and easy to wash out. It protects hair from direct heat and adds lustre and sheen to it.
6. Wax: It is good oil with rich ingredients and is mainly used for dreadlocks. Since it is also non-greasy, it works well with dry hair and scalp. For best results, apply very little amounts to avoid clogging the scalp. It is good for protecting the hair from direct heat as well.
