Twenty-five women rushed to hospital after undergoing FGM

Twenty-five females from Kaptele village in Bureti constituency have been rushed to Kapkatet sub-county hospital after undergoing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Bureti Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Felicia Nafula added that they had arrested a 60-year-old woman who performed the prohibited act on the 25 females aged between 16-33 years.

“When security agencies arrived at the scene following a tip-off from the public they found the women and girls inside two different grass-thatched houses and having undergone the cut. We also managed to arrest the woman who performed the prohibited act,” she said.

A medic at the Kapkatet sub-county hospital said they were waiting for a gynaecologist to review the patients.

"We have stopped the bleeding. A further examination is underway to determine whether they underwent mutilation," said the source.

Bureti OCPD said they were finalizing investigations into the incident after which the suspects will be arraigned.

"All the suspects will be arraigned and charged with practising the prohibited act,” said Nafula.
