Leaders have reacted differently to President Uhuru Kenyatta's decision to hand Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi more powers.
Keiyo South MP Daniel Rono said he found it interesting that a minister would supervise his colleagues. “To me, it looks funny. Other Cabinet secretaries reporting to a fellow CS does not make sense. They should instead report to the President or his deputy.”
Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen congratulated the President in a tweet. “Congratulations to President @UKenyatta for the Exec Order 1 of 2019 and to my friends CSs Matiangi & Rotich for the additional responsibilities. We look forward to a more co-ordinated service delivery & greater accountability to the people of Kenya. God bless you @WilliamsRuto”

Nyeri Town MP Wambugu Ngunjiri said President Kenyatta was depoliticising the issue of development. “He is putting together a team of technocrats who can determine how much money is needed for projects and coordinate their implementation.”

The chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly, Opiyo Wandayi, said under the Constitution, the President was allowed to re-organise his government.
“The law gives him the prerogative to assign and re-assign CSs and other public officers.”
Minority Leader in the National Assembly John Mbadi said he supported the President since the move would bring to an end a situation where some leaders dangled development projects to others in exchange for political backing.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi claimed that Deputy President William Ruto had been using projects to punish those who do not sing his political tune.
Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior said he doubted the appointment was meant to alienate any member of the President’s Cabinet. [Report by Protus Onyango, Rawlings Otieno and Moses Nyamori]
