Police in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County on Saturday arrested a 30-year-old man while ferrying bags of bhang worth Sh300,000 on a motorbike to Rodi Kopany township.

The suspect identified as Charles Ouma who is a resident of Nyatike Sub-county in the neighbouring Migori County was arrested near Ongeng’ trading centre in Ndhiwa on Saturday.

According to the police, Ouma had allegedly ferried the bhang from Nyatike before being nabbed on his way to Rodi Kopany township in Homa Bay.

The suspect tried to escape into a nearby bush after coming face to face with police officers who were patrolling in the area.

According to Ndhiwa Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer Paul Makonge, the suspect attempted to abandon the narcotic in the bush so that he could disappear using the motorbike but the police officers thwarted his efforts.

“He had already cut the rubber band to make it easier to escape on the motorbike but we got hold of him,” Makonge said, adding that the suspect was taken to Ndhiwa Police Station.

Makonge said the suspect was in the company of another motorcyclist who was clearing the way for him. The accomplice is being sought by police.

The police boss said most bhang peddlers from Migori use Sori- Rodi - Kopany Road to smuggle their supply.

“We have established a surveillance team to stop peddling narcotics along this road. We cannot allow them to take bhang from another county and smuggle it using our roads,” said Makonge.

The suspect will appear in court on Monday.
