Nairobi, Kenya: Today, most start-ups die off within the first year of implementation owed to challenges in raising capital, implementation and entrepreneurial support systems.
UoN has developed Computing for development (C4D) labs that enable student with viable ideas for tech based start-ups to nurture their ideas into successful businesses.
“These Labs have positioned us as leaders in innovation, research and development conscious of problems that require innovative solutions. The impact has been tremendous,” says Prof. Okello Odongo, the Director, School of Computing and Informatics.
During the incubation the start-ups are modeled based on market requirements to minimize chances of failure once released into the market.
Startups benefit from a seed funding of up to USD 5,000 each; specialized startup development training; mentorship from industry and academic experienced partners; personalized coaching on business development as well as links to potential sponsors, partners and customers.
Some of the successful start-ups born from the program are Chura Limited (www.chura.co.ke ) that aims at easing the difficulties experienced by users in accessing services across different mobile service providers by providing an integrated, user friendly, easy to use package for mobile subscribers, irrespective of the network provider and Intelligent Traffic; bringing sanity to Kenyan roads a device that warns, cautions, and bills drivers in case of black spots, children crossing, animal crossing, zebra crossing is now here.
