Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri on Friday launched his bid for governor, saying he was the right candidate to take over from Governor James Ongwae.
Prof Ongeri, 83, who spoke at his Gesusu home, said he has "gained vast experience over his many years as a civil servant, Member of Parliament, and Cabinet minister."
"People of Kisii County, I have decided to present myself as a candidate for the Kisii governorship seat in the 2022 General Election and request for your support," said Ongeri.
The senator said Kisii residents required a "tried and tested" leader to serve them as governor, and he was ready to sell his agenda. He promised to continue with the "good work" started by Ongwae.

Ongeri said he would ensure stability and progress in the county if elected next August. Deputy Governor Joash Maangi said he was in the same team with Ongwae, Ongeri and Woman Representative Janet Ongera.
Other candidates seeking the governor's seat include Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati, Kenya National Congress Party leader Manson Nyamweya, Nyaribari Masaba MP Ezekiel Machogu, former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara, Transport CAS Christopher Obure, and Charles Matoke.
