Revelations of students‘ bullying at Alliance High School should not shock or annoy us. We saw it coming but as the proverbial ostrich buried our heads in the sand.
Parents and government are to blame for the behaviour of students. What is the teacher at Alliance supposed to do when a Form One student reports a bullying case? S/he is not allowed to punish the students. The position of a teacher in Kenya today has been reduced to the lowest level. Some parents demean teachers and their children have taken after them. How then do we expect this “low class servants“ to discipline “royalty.“
We have abandoned parenting and only dump children in schools. We should do away with boarding schools to force to parents spend quality time with their children. Those students in Alliance are paying for the failure of the society.
Who will punish their predecessors who introduced them to bullying? Maybe they are in big offices being hailed while their culture is ruining other boys‘ future. Maybe we should go the reconciliation way and allow the indicted students to be ‘human again.‘
