“Go to Cameroon, tell the continent that Kenya is back again on the stage and ready to conquer the world.”
That was the message from Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa to national women’s football team Harambee Starlets during yesterday’s luncheon at the Kasarani Stadium ahead of the 2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) finals in Cameroon.
The 21-member squad to be captained by Thika Queens defender Ann Oluoch leaves for Yaoundé this morning, where they will camp for two weeks before the tournament kicks off on November 19.
Kenya have been drawn in a tough Pool B alongside champions Nigeria, Mali and Ghana. However, with their impressive preparations, Mwendwa is confident the Starlets can achieve their semi-finals target.
“We are breaking ground in everything in this federation. The Starlets are our beacon; they are our shining light. We have never gone to the Cup of Nations before and I think it is a good thing. Let's go there, look up to the skies and say what can we do. These ladies are setting the trend to do that,” said Mwendwa.
