Traffic jams are degrading the environment at an alarming rate. This is especially in Third World countries where most vehicles are poorly maintained.
Traffic jams make vehicles to consume more fuel which leads to emissions of dangerous gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen.
These gases directly pollute the air and may result in respiratory diseases such as asthma.
During snarl-ups, poorly maintained vehicles also emit a lot of smoke due to incomplete combustion. The smoke contains invisible particles that pollute air directly.
