BAT Kenya to spend Sh50m in reforestation

Nairobi; Kenya: BAT Kenya has embarked on a major reforestation programme at a cost of Sh50 million.

The reforestation campaign is being rolled out in partnership with stakeholders under the Kenya @50 Tree Growing Legacy Campaign programme.

The trees will be grown in key areas that have been listed by the Kenya @ 50 secretariat. Already, the firm has commenced afforestation within the Western, Nyanza and Eastern areas of Kenya, where the company has more than 5,000 contracted farmers.

The firm, in a statement to the media during the annual Eco Challenge Awards sponsored by Total Kenya, said the campaign to grow trees was driven by the need to increase the country’s forest cover to more than 10 per cent.

BAT Kenya was recognised during the awards for outstanding achievements and received the Outstanding Award for growing more than a million trees last year, with a survival rate of 90 per cent.
