Taita-Taveta County has introduced a feeding programme for all day primary and secondary school candidates sitting for this year's national examinations.
Governor John Mruttu said his administration will spend more than Sh8 million on the food programme.
He said a total of over 13,300 students will benefit from the programme initiated by his government.
Addressing residents and leaders during the Mashujaa Day fete at Wundanyi Dawson Mwanyumba stadium yesterday, Mruttu said the programme will ensure that candidates concentrate on their final examinations.
Present at the celebrations were County Commissioner Oningoi Ole Sossio, Wundanyi MP Thomas Mwadeghe, Taita Deputy County Commissioner Christopher Siele and members of the county assembly among other leaders. "Candidates will be provided with free lunch during the examination period. This will help them concentrate on their exams and revision," said the governor.

He also said the introduction of a school feeding programme for day school students will help improve the poor standards of education and enrollment in the region. Last week, Mruttu officially launched the Early Childhood Development Education feeding programme for 2,000 pupils in the region under the Rapid Results Initiative.
The progamme comes at a time when the region is still grappling with food shortages.
