Nyahururu, Kenya: The Government has allowed the burial of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga's late wife in Laikipia County.

The late Grace Wairimu will be buried at Maina's home at Theria in Laikipia West.

He will be buried alongside Maina's nephew Dickson Mwangi.

Nyahururu sub county commissioner Kiplagat Tarus said that they had issued a burial permit to the family for the burial.

"It is true that we have issued the family with the burial permit and they are free to go on. We found no reason to deny them their right since it is Maina's home," he said on phone.

Tarus however said that security measures had been put in place to prevent any uncertainty.

"All our security personnel have been put on alert and we will provide protection to the family and other members of the public. There is no cause for alarm," he said.

According to family sources, the bodies will be picked at 8am from Nyahururu district mortuary where they have been lying since May.

A mass will later be held at the family home before the burial takes place later in the afternoon.

It is not yet clear which church will preside over the mass.

The two were to be buried in his Nkurruka farm, Kitengela in June but the local community and security officers stopped the ceremony.

The community said that they will not let anyone associated with Mungiki to be buried there.

The deceased and two others were killed when Maina's convoy was sprayed with bullets along Ol Kalou-Nyahururu road on May 24.

Njenga was injured on his left shoulder and treated in Nyahururu and a Nairobi hospital.

It has been understood that he has been in talks with the Kitengela community to allow him burry the two there but in futile.

"That is why we have decided that we cannot keep the bodies anymore and we opted for the Laikipia farm. It has been a long and traumatizing journey for the family," a family source that sought anonymity said.
