Political leaders have been sending their condolences to the family and friends of Kibra MP Ken Okoth who died on Friday after a long battle with cancer.

Many public figures took to social media to share their condolences. They described Ken as visionary and exceptional legislator whose commitment to his duty as Kibra MP was exemplary.

High ranking government leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and Governor Hassan Joho expressed their shock and grief.

President Uhuru said: “It is with a heavy heart that I have this afternoon received the sad news of the death of Kibra MP Ken Okoth. Death has robbed us of an astute legislator. May God comfort his family, friends and indeed all Kenyans during this difficult period of mourning.”

His efforts during his tenure as the MP for Kibra Constituency did not go unnoticed.

“Ken spared no efforts in executing his transformational agenda. He leaves behind a rich legacy of a great leader and a very progressive lawmaker. It is unfortunate that his demise comes at a time when we all looked forward to his recovery and comeback to the National Assembly after his return to the country recently.” National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi said.

ODM leader Raila Odinga highlighted his bravery in the fight against cancer. “I'm deeply saddened by the passing of our MP. Ken battled Cancer with unique bravery while serving his voters to the last minutes of his life. May God grant peace and strength to his family and may he rest in peace.”

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi in a statement to the press said: “Despite the burden of fighting cancer, Ken remained focused working for the people he represented. This fidelity to servant leadership made him stand tall among his peers in the National Assembly. On behalf of myself and family, I join his family, people of Kibra and the country in mourning the loss.”

Governor Joho also took to his social media to express his condolences: “Mombasa mourns with the family, people of Kibra and the country over the death of a brave and robust young legislator the late Hon Ken Okoth. Mheshimiwa was a brave warrior who always stood for the rights of his people and fought a brutal battle with Cancer.”

Ken Okoth was elected as Kibra MP in March 2013. He was re-elected for a second term in the 2017 general elections, a position he held until his death.
