Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers are investigating a suicide note purportedly written by a university student.
The two-page letter written by someone identifying himself only as Jared and addressed to his parents and fellow students sparked social media outrage as he narrated how stressed he is.
The student from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) says he is frustrated since there is no one to help him handle personal problems.
In the letter, which made rounds in WhatsApp groups the alleged student says he has undergone a lot of problems without anyone available to offer a helping hand.
“It is with deep sorrow that I have decided to do what I want to do. It has been long struggle tirelessly with no help from people. Since I joined this institution, no one has seen the importance of helping me,” reads the letter in part.
“I have now seen it important to commit suicide and leave you in peace. I know such a decision will be of pain to people but all in all, don’t worry because you never cared about me,” reads the note.
He reveals he has gone without food at times, surviving on porridge as people give him empty promises.
He directs his family to bury him without a casket among other many directives.
“Don’t bury me in a coffin, just put me directly in the soil. If you never gave me food, don’t also afford to buy a coffin,” reads the undated letter.
“Don’t eat expensive meals. Kama hamkuweza kunipatia hicho chakula, basi pia msikule vyakula vya bei ghali. (If you didn’t give me that food, don’t eat sumptuous food.”
He directs his remains to be taken to church for a memorial service and that the convoy to the burial site should not have more than three vehicles.
“Sometimes I needed fare to go home, but did not get it and ended up trekking home. Where were you with those expensive vehicles?” he asks?
He wants the note to be read in public before he is finally interred. He extends his gratitude to his parents and church which, he says, were always on his side and also Milele FM presenters who gave him hope.
“I know I had much to do in this world but ya Mungu ni mengi. Bye to MMUST, parents, students, relatives and Kenyans. You will find me dead in my house in the next six days,” he signs off writing has Jared.
Kakamega Sub-County Police Commander David Kabena said the matter has been reported to the DCI who said he would investigate the authenticity of the letter and take action.
“Attempt to kill or commit suicide is a criminal offence. We are treating the matter with seriousness having forwarded the same to the DCI for investigations,” said Mr Kabena.
