The newly constructed shopping stalls at the bus park in Homa Bay town have gradually been turned into cheap lodgings by randy couples.
Five couples were caught coming out of the stalls and when cornered by boda boda operators they explained they had no money for lodgings.
This trend is common among ‘night nurses’ out for a ‘short time’ with clients.
Ken Ouma, a trader near the bus park, says the culprits occupy the stalls between 7.30pm and 6am and some “young men who attend night clubs end up spending all the money on alcohol and unable to pay for a lodge resort to having sex in the stalls.”
Edward Ode, a matatu operator, says, “You will find a young man or woman covering themselves with a curtain used by Maasai morans, pretending to be feeling cold yet their main objective is to use it as their bedding in the stalls.”
Omondi Okendo, newspaper vendor expresses concern that this state of affairs poses the risk of increasing HIV prevalence in the county. He says “this situation is worrying parents because many men will have sex with school girls in these stalls.”
A cheap lodging in town costs Sh500, but the 127 stalls which were completed this June only come at the cost of mosquito bites.
County Chief Officer for Land and Housing George Opiata says they have finalised the process of distributing the stalls to businesspeople.
“We are only waiting for the Governor to open the stalls officially so that business owners can occupy them,” said Opiata.
