Taita-Taveta County Council has implemented a new salary increment for workers as agreed in a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) last year.
The County Clerk Michael Njogu, said the Council had paid more than Sh7.3 million to employees in salaries and allowances.
“We have honored the CBA signed between the Kenya Local Government Workers Union and the Government in September last year,” he said.
Speaking to the press at his Wundanyi office yesterday, Mr Njogu said Sh1.7 million was taxed to the new salaries.
“We have strengthened our revenue collection systems and sealed all corruption loopholes. There is no laxity among workers as far as revenue collection is concerned,” he said.
Njogu spoke as Transitional Authority officials said the Voi Municipal Council cannot meet its financial obligations.
Fred Ouma, the Interim County Secretary said the financial crisis has adversely affected service delivery to the public.
“The council is in serious trouble and cannot meet its financial requirements,” he disclosed.
Mr Ouma was briefing the Commission for Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) Commissioner Philemon Mwaisaka on the progress made and challenges in the implementation of the devolved system.
Speaking in Wundanyi town, the Secretary said the County Government would take over payment of salaries of all local authorities.
Investigations by The Standard reveal that allowances had also been suspended as the Council continues to struggle to pay salaries for its workers.
