Farah Maalim defends President Ruto after Gachagua called for U.S. action

Dadaab MP Farah Maalim has come to the defence of President William Ruto, dismissing calls by DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua for the United States to pursue legal action against the head of state.

In comments to the press, Maalim said Kenyans are capable of safeguarding their freedom and leaders from what he described as unwarranted external pressure.

“We are a proud people who fought for our independence,” Maalim said. “As long as we have Kenyans with courage, and we have many, nobody is going to mess with us or treat us like sub‑humans.”

He referenced historical instances of foreign military intervention to underscore his point, insisting such actions would never be attempted against a sitting Kenyan president.

Maalim added that no foreign power, regardless of its strength, can act against Kenya if the nation itself does not consent, describing Gachagua’s appeal as an affront to Kenya’s sovereignty and dignity.

Gachagua recently renewed his accusations against the president during a public address, alleging that proceeds from a large fraud case in Minnesota, United States, were being funneled into Kenya to finance political campaigns and business interests.

He urged the U.S. government to emulate strong‑arm tactics used in other countries, such as Venezuela, to go after alleged beneficiaries.

The exchange has ignited debate online, with some Kenyans defending the president and asserting that without concrete evidence of wrongdoing, such external interventions are unwarranted.

One social media user wrote: “If there’s nothing to hide, why fear an investigation? But until then, let’s focus on governance.”

“No need to worry, our dad is an American sweet darling. If they wanted to arrest him, they would have done it a long time ago. He was there just before Christmas, and Trump invited him to the 2028 U.S Olympics as chief of guest during the Congo-Rwanda peace deal,” another added.

Farah Maalim is a veteran Kenyan politician and lawyer who currently serves as the Member of Parliament for the Dadaab Constituency.

Having been active in Kenyan politics since the 1990s, he has held several high-ranking positions, most notably serving as the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya between 2008 and 2013.

Maalim's most recent major controversy involves a viral video in which he allegedly stated that if he were president, he would have "slaughtered" 5,000 Gen-Z protesters daily.

These remarks were made in reference to the youth-led demonstrations against the Finance Bill in mid-2024, which Maalim characterized as an attempted coup.

The statements sparked national outrage, leading to his expulsion from the Wiper Party and a summons from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

While Maalim defended himself by claiming the video was edited and manipulated, the backlash resulted in his removal from various parliamentary leadership roles.
