Chesumei MP Paul Biego counts losses after Sh20 million truck burnt down mid-protest

Chesumei MP Paul Biego is counting significant losses after one of his trucks was set ablaze during protests in Naivasha linked to rising fuel prices.

Biego confirmed that the vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz Actros 3340 valued at more than Sh20 million, belonged to him.

Images and videos of the burning truck circulated widely on social media and news platforms.

“Because of the lawlessness witnessed during today’s uncalled-for maandamano, my truck worth over Sh20 million, an Actros 3340, was destroyed in Naivasha,” he said in a Facebook post.

The MP condemned the destruction, blaming chaos during the demonstrations, and suggested the vehicle may have been deliberately targeted due to its North Rift registration.

He raised concerns over possible profiling of vehicles linked to the region.

Biego said the incident represented a deep personal and financial loss, noting the truck symbolised years of investment and sacrifice.

“Imagine the sheer heartbreak of watching years of your life’s work vanish in a single moment of lawlessness,” he said, adding, "What's more heartbreaking and deeply unsettling is that there seems to be a coordinated, active targeting and monitoring of vehicles and trucks from North Rift in this ongoing violence. My heart is heavy, and the pain is deep. Seeing the honest labour of citizens destroyed in an instant is utterly heartbreaking."

The incident comes amid escalating unrest in several towns as protests over high fuel prices and the rising cost of living intensify.

Videos and photos showed the heavy commercial vehicle engulfed in flames as crowds gathered nearby.

The destruction has sparked debate online, with some condemning violence against private property while others called for calm and accountability from authorities.
