Malindi legislator Aisha Jumwa who has not appeared in public since she was accused of embezzling public funds surrendered to the police in Mombasa yesterday.

Jumwa, who is accused of embezzling Sh20 million and money-laundering, drove to Port Police Station at 12.15pm, about 15 minutes after posting a video clip online indicating her intention to comply with the Friday court order that required her to report to the station where he co-accused are held.

In the clip, she appears to be leaving a house accompanied by a girl but it is not clear where the video was taken or if that is the place where she has been holed up since Thursday.

When she failed to appear in court on Friday, prosecutors claimed she was hiding, and yesterday, she denied that she was in hiding.

Jumwa was accompanied by her lawyer Jared Magolo, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and family members.

She was processed by five detectives from Financial Crime Investigation Unit who had traveled from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi.

Jumwa, who later addressed journalists outside The Standard group offices on Moi Avenue in Mombasa, left the police station at 1.05pm.

She denied that she has been on the run and said she came to Mombasa from Nairobi on Saturday evening.

“I couldn’t have gone into hiding because the DCI has offices all over ... in Malindi, Mtwapa, Shanzu and so on. There is no place I could hide at,” she said.

She added she was not aware she was being sought and she was ready for the court session today. Jumwa is wanted over the loss of Sh20 million from the Malindi National Government Constituency Development Fund.

The other suspects are CDF manager Wachu Omar Abdallah, officers Sophia Said, Bernard Kai, Margaret Faith Kalume, Robert Katana and government engineer Kennedy Otieno Onyango.
