Unemployment amongst the youth remains a major challenge confronting this country and efforts to address it deserve credit. The problem is already manifesting itself through high crime rates; inter communal conflicts over scarcity of resources, cattle rustling and radicalization among the country's youths. Apparently youths are joining militia groups in pursuit of their daily bread.
Regrettably, we are losing our brightest minds to terrorism and violence, while it would have been possible to alleviate the recurrence of such vices. It is imperative to note the steps that are undertaken by the government to address the rate of unemployment amongst the youth.
Most importantly the energy of ambitious and eager young people should be channelled towards innovation instead of destruction. Even though the youth continue to encounter hostility, elitism, limited space, stereotypes and negative perception within political hierarchies, the youth need to feel that they are useful and appreciated members of the Kenyan society.
Despite a number of steps taken to facilitate youth engagement in income-generating activities and empowerment by the current government, full implementation remains a challenge.
This is because of slow uptake, bureaucracy and corruption signalling that there is something awfully amiss in the management of youth funds.
